Tick tock ladies.  It’s almost time for the Inauguration.  I mean the Oscars.  Or is it the Golden Globes?  Wait.  I mean the Inauguration.  For sure.

But pardon my confusion please, because, now let’s face it girls, just between us, this event has red carpet written all over it, and let’s not pretend it doesn’t, okay?  And it doesn’t make us shallow either, being bold enough to admit it.  Yeah, yeah, we know we’re swearing in a new president and all, and we know cameras beaming from around the world will be focusing in on the swearing in.  Okay already! We get it!  But let’s face it.  Regardless of your personal politics, aren’t you just so dying to know what Michelle will be wearing?  Who will be custom making her gown?  Who will be flying in from who knows where to do her hair and makeup?

And what about her jewels, handbag,  and shoes?  Good golly.  When does a new first lady begin to prepare for an event of such magnitude?  Sure, we know she’s proud of her husband, and has most certainly cued her lovely young daughters on being sure to be on their very best behavior, but once that’s all down,  how does she then begin focus on the very significant, most viewed and overly dissected, under the harshest editorial glare, fashion issue of this event, which is what in the world will Mrs. Barrack Obama, first lady of the United States, be wearing?

We don’t yet know too much about her personal style.  I haven’t formed a solid opinion.  Mostly I think she has a sense of what’s appropriate for body type, age, event, etc… though don’t get me started on the dress she wore on election night, oh heavens no.
Editors from New York to Paris and back will have something to say about every single seen and unseen detail about her selection, finding it, no doubt, either a hit, or hopefully not, a dreaded and horrid miss.

We’ve all seen the fashion police.  We know how acerbic they can be.  Michelle Obama will be as fair game as anyone else in their scope.  There will be front page photos of the first lady printed in papers and magazines in every language the world over.

Not too much pressure, though right?  Not at all!  Remember gals,  we are supposed to be evolved, enlightened, better than that even!  But face it here, mostly we’re not, and the day after the swearing in, regardless of the power of the words spoken during the proudest moments, what we’ll likely remember, after all the soundbites have played through their loops, is what Michelle wore.  Good or bad.  Right or wrong.  We are visual creatures.  Even voyeuristic ones.  Does Michelle care if we like her gown or not?  Though she’ll likely never say, how can she not?  Does anyone like to be held to such rabid public scrutiny, when the issues are far greater, far more important, than what the intellectual elite may deem as ‘nothing more than a silly frock?’

Hmmmmmm is what I say.  Our new first lady is far more savvy than that, I’m sure.  Smart, savvy, connected, tuned in.  For one of the biggest events of their lives?  Yeah.  I’m sure she’s given it some thought.  Stay tuned.  We’ll see soon enough.
