Got Ink?

Katy Gorman

Got ink?  I don’t,  but it’s on my bucket list, though in pencil.  I’m a little chicken, only because I’m fickle, and while I’m sure I’d love the image for a full four to six months, I can’t say I can commit to it, permanently, on my skin, forever, like til I die.

But still I want one!  I read recently that there are magical new inks that are created to fade, or disappear after six months to a year or so.  That’s my kind of tattoo, but minus the bad ass full on glory of it, I know.  I don’t think it’s right to do it that way,  it feels like cheating even, like I’m cheating the tattoo purists out there somehow.

But still - I spend much more time thinking about it than I should.  I even ask my fairly conservative, but sometimes bad ass husband, ‘Hey! Will you get a tattoo with me for Christmas?’  Answer always the same—no.  Then I continue—‘birthday?  Mother’s day?  Valentine’s???’  No, no, no., is always his simple, consistent position, which in fairness, I have to respect.

Just because I’d like one, doesn’t mean he has to.  I just think it’d be more fun is all.
Does anyone out there watch LA ink, with Kat Von D?  She is an outrageous artist, with a vibe and style all her own.  She and her crew create art on skin that is so good it’s hard to believe.  They do old school, new school, memorial, pin up, color, black and grey, gangster lettering, like no one’s business.  Some of the effects they create have a soft air brushed quality, some are cartoon like, others painterly.  All are major league.

There are folks who can pull off the look even in evening wear - Angelina Jolie comes to mind.  There are men out there who in the most classic tuxedo can exude a little edginess and intrigue having a little line art extend from the wrist, beyond the cufflinks at the black tie affair.  That’s the effect I’m interested in - that kind of understatement.  But I like the in your face also.  What’s the big deal?

Well, in my case, it’s my four daughters who ‘won’t let me get one’…… at 46 years old, it’s my children who are saying no.  And my husband, while he won’t say no to my getting one, he just won’t say yes to our getting one, which I think is the way to go!
I’m used to my daughters trying to micromanage my life, my style, my everything - as if.
If my collar is crooked, or they don’t like my shoes, well then, the entire household is put on alert!  Did you see mom’s boots, repeats like a chorus throughout the hallways, up and down the stairs.

I can hear it now with the tattoo.  I’m not sure they’d let me out of my room, much less out of the house, and into the neighborhood.  But eventually, like love demands, they’d have to accept me for who I am, the closeted tattoo wimp.
