Spying On Suburbia: Consumer or Creator Elizabeth JamesConsumer or Creator? I have decided that there are two types that lurk among us…the consumers and the creators. I got up early on Saturday for a nice mother daughter outing to the Short Pump mall. I had my pick of parking. No, not an economic crisis in Short Pump, I arrived right at 9am. We started off in the Nordstoms. I am happy that I did not smack this Euro trash wannabe right in the face when she cut me off mid-sentence while I was speaking to the sales woman. I think the only reason I did not smack her Gucci sunglasses off her eyes was because I was wondering how she ended up clearly lost in Short Pump? It was funny. She was asking for a specific designer. I almost laughed. Don’t get me wrong, I love SPTC and I know we are lucky to have a Nordstroms at all. I wanted to say look around…we have a Talbots and Harolds in the River Road Shopping Center. You could fly there on your broom. Maybe she would melt in the face of sweater sets and headbands. I do admit that any woman with style strikes my fancy, having lived in a major city; I do still cringe when I see a sea of Crocs and Vera Bradley surround me at every major event. So, if it wasn’t for her over the top rudeness, I would probably have admired her from afar. I digress. It occurred to me as I mindlessly bought different items for this holiday. It occurred to me that there are two types. The consumers: Those of us who (regardless of our financial status) buy every one of the latest, coolest, needless items. We have to, we have to because it is what everyone else is doing or our kids have asked for or what our boy friend wanted or what our parents cannot live without. This brings me to the creators…those among us who create the things we desire. They can afford every thing on the list (and some), they can because they created these things that we consume. I have decided that I don’t want to be a consumer. I want to be a creator. I want to create the things to be consumed, so that, I can consume even more. Now, all I need is the right idea…you know, like Crocs. You gotta love the holidays…it is such a lesson in economics. E
