The Show Must Go On! Katy GormanStop the presses people—big news here. Cue the lights, begin the drum roll. Okay, listen up—here goes. Victoria Secret models admit to dieting prior to runway shows! Hooray! Round of applause here. Big sighs of relief, finally! Seriously. That’s news? Front page news ladies! In some small and twisted way, can’t we at least, if begrudgingly, admit that belongs in the good news file? Even just for a minute? Models are humans too remember. They did not choose the genes they were gifted, I mean born with. Think of all the indignities they surely suffered as gawky and gangly young teens, standing head and shoulders above the boys in their class. Be nice now girls. Think of how hard it must have been for them to find jeans that actually made it all the way to their ankles. And in fairness, tall and skinny didn’t necessarily get them picked first in gym class either, when divvying up for teams. Even the cheerleaders had more going for them early on, than those later, late blooming, on to to be world famous, multi million dollar contract earning models, of the Victoria secret variety. But hooray for the headlines today, the ones that tell us those girls have to work at it too, okay? Let’s be grateful for that small, though golden, nugget shall we? Think of how hard it must be to strut down the runways, in front of international press, for all the world to see, with nothing on but heels, some feathers, and something loosely defined as lingerie by the marketing masterminds behind the Victoria’s Secret machine, if there even is such a thing. Come on, we know it’s fantasy, and for that matter, you and I both know there is no Victoria who has a secret either, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun for some, and a lot of hard work for others. I have a neighbor who moved here from NYC, who actually was a personal trainer for those Victoria Secret models. She can tell you a thing or two about all the hard work involved in maintaining said fantasy, and the vast difference between the fantasy and the really hard reality of it all. But that’s the beauty of it, in it’s twisted kind of way. The fantasy, the illusion, the very name - Victoria’s Secret. As though there is a suggestion there, of something more, or in this case less. But that’s showbiz gals, let’s not forget! Behind the glitter, the fame, the genes, and the other jeans, there’s a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, okay? It’s not necessarily us versus them here. And whether we’re up to it some days or no, the show must go on. If those girls have to work at it, and do, then what makes us any different? Besides the millions of dollars I mean. And the trainers, and nutritionists, of course. Genes aside, we can do it, right? Maybe not runway worthy results, but maybe something better than we’ve got now! I say it’s worth a try!
