Venture into Vintage

Cameron Walker

It was love at first sight.

I’m not sure if it was the unique prints and colors or the beauty I found within the worn fabrics.  Perhaps it was the smell of the vintage clothing that made my heart skip beats.  The carefully stitched clothing was hanging from the racks just waiting to come back to life and tell another story and I was ready to listen.

I was in heaven.

Vintage clothing is a gift from the past.  A piece of clothing that is old and unique that can add a new, chic flair to a new outfit.  Although most of vintage clothing is replicated in mass quantities in today’s fashion, nothing can set you apart from the rest of the fashion world more than a true piece of vintage clothing.

Shopping for vintage clothes can be so much fun.  Richmond has great places to dive in to what seems like grandma’s old, dusty chests that sat in her mothball-infested attic.  Remove the dust, grandma and mothballs of coarse and you get two great vintage stores – Halcyon and Bygones.  Halcyon and Bygones are both located in downtown Richmond.

Chiffon evening gowns, sun dresses, bathing suits, hats, purses and juayaberas are just a few of the things hanging from Halcyons racks.  Kimonos decorate the store’s window and colorful scarves made of different fabrics hang from the ceiling.  Connie will great you when you step in the door.  She can tell you anything you want to know about the vintage clothing surrounding you.

Fedora hats, tuxedos, gowns, tiaras, gloves and costume jewelry decorate and the walls and racks at Bygones.  A large variety of hats and jewelry will likely catch your eye when you first walk in.  What seems like a mile of racks heading straight back will satisfy your vintage needs for hours.

All of the pieces you need to create that original outfit are right here in your neighborhood, now all you need is a side of your personal flair and confidence.  Mix and match vintage pieces with new pieces.  Look for bright colors and patterns for summer!

“Do pick pieces that reflect your personality instead of following some social sense of what’s ‘right.’ Today it’s appropriate to wear jeans with vintage pieces and an evening bag.”
