ABC’s promising new show on teen pregnancy…just what I have been waiting for! Elizabeth JamesThe New Summer Series on ABC I went to see Twilight AGAIN! I went with my sister and the whole addiction is really sad at this point. (See my blog for more on this.) I will say that I sat through maybe 30 minutes of advertising commercials prior to the movie. There were only three trailers, it was so strange. The last one to air was for a new show on ABC. So, before I settled into my mid-life crisis mental love affair I had to sit through something even more disturbing then my own thoughts. There is a new show coming out this summer on ABC. It is about a teenage girl who gets pregnant. She is in high school and it appears to be about the drama that unfolds with her pregnancy. There were clips of her and another high school boy passionately hugging, her concerned girl friend reveling in the drama in the girls bathroom. The girl looked to be about 14, maybe a freshman. It was kind of sick. I mean I am very understanding and understand that these situations occur. But what is going on when ABC realizes that there is a market for this show. Is there? That is the first thing that freaks me out. Second, if in fact there is this market then it will be all the white people in suburbia. They will watch this drama and become so consumed with this fairy tale white well off kid dealing with teen pregnancy that their ratings will be so high that the advertisers will spend enough money to pull our economy out of a slump? Is this the grand plan…well, I don’t know about anything pulling us out of the current slump but if you know anything about media this is the grand plan…make a buck. I just have a problem with the sleazy nature in which ABC is going to go about doing this. I mean, Juno was a great movie. It was pretty real for that particular scenario and for the material it focused on. There is nothing glamorous about a teenage pregnancy. I am sure there are many parents, teenagers etc…who would agree. It is difficult and sad and makes a lot of people grow up very quickly. It is filled with lessons that you would prefer to learn a bit later. There is a beauty to having a baby and it can work out to the betterment of everyone around them, but a TV show dedicated to it, it just seems wrong. No wonder my six year old is telling me that she sits in the bathtub and thinks about her boyfriends! What has the world come to? Am I turning into my mother? This is more frightening then finding myself lusting after a 22 year old Vampire actor and that in itself is pretty well, sick. Conflicted on Monday- E

Comments Are you talking about the show that is already out? It comes on ABC. It’s about a freshman girl who is pregnant and dealing with all of the issues. It has Molly Ringwald on it. If so, the second season is about to start. In fact, I think I saw that it starts tonight. posted by cwalker |

Yes, I am…thank you for clarifying. I had no idea, so there I was readying myself to watch another fantastic teen flick for the second time (Twilight) and I saw the preview and assumed it was new…it was just too scandalous to ignore. I will have to give it a fair viewing. posted by rclark |
