The Buying Power of Women Mair Downing It was a random Wednesday and I was sipping an obligatory Cosmo at Osaka and waiting for my girlfriends. We’re meeting before the 7:20 SATC show to nosh a little and unwind over some cocktails. (Hence why the Cosmo is obligatory.) So it’s not just that I’ve been waiting for this movie since the HBO show ended. Though I am totally mad about this show, I was more excited to hang with the girls. (Granted it was as tad bit ironic that the dum-da-dum-dum SATC ring alerts me that my friend is calling to say she’s running a little behind. HA! I have the ringtone!) Ever since I became new mommy four months ago, friend sightings are few and far between. I miss easy-does-it conversation and good gossip. I miss the camaraderie and confidence that only good friends can provide. This night didn’t disappoint. We ate sushi and ordered drinks and thoroughly had our own version of happy hour until right before the show started. I was so touched and tipsy that I called my husband to thank him for BABEsitting when I snuck out for a smoke. Hahah. Clearly I don’t get out much. As I was leaving a message, I noticed the restaurant patrons were all women. All of them. All dressed up, classy and professional, having cocktails and a good time. Interestingly, at 7:15, virtually the whole restaurant stood up and headed next door. OMG! We all had the same idea.
At 7:20, on a random Wednesday, four women tried to search for seating at a packed SATC show and we all had to smile a little. People whined that this movie had no plot and critics bashed the film. But clearly Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte knew something that critics did not. Never underestimate the power of women. (New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. certainly didn’t!)
