What’s Lurking In Your Bedroom?

Alisha Gray-Johnson, MSW

WHEN YOU LOOK INTO YOUR BEDROOM, WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Are there piles of clothes, papers from work, a midnight snack stash, bills and other stuff laying around? If so, read on.  Think about the purpose of your bedroom. Generally speaking, your bedroom should be a place for rest, relaxation and intimacy. If your bedroom isn’t relaxing and calming, you have some work to do.

CLEAR THE SPACE
Get all the “stuff” that is not calming out of your immediate sight. For instance, if you choose to pay bills in your bedroom, don’t keep them laying out. Designate a drawer to house your bills in. I would hate the thought of Virginia Power, Verizon or the Department of Utilities looking over me as I attempt to get a restful night of sleep
Do you have clothes on the bed, chair and door knobs? If so, put them in the closet or wherever they belong.
Do you work in your bedroom?  If possible, move your workstation out of your bedroom. This includes work projects, documents and related electronics.  In this instance, don’t mix business and pleasure.
If there is anything else that is not related to REST and RELAXATION in that room, try relocating it.  If you are not able to relocate it, move it out of sight.

ADD SOOTHING TOUCHES
Identify items or colors that make you feel calm and relaxed. It may be candles, fragrances or vibrant colored bedroom accessories. Sometimes, the special touches are there, but you can’t see them over the clutter.
