Is Your House Overweight

Alisha Gray-Johnson, MSW, Messless Expert

Is your home continuing to consume furniture, accessories, clothes, paper and other stuff without cleansing itself of unnecessary, unwanted items?  Have you ever had one “junk room” that spread into another room or space.  This is simply called “Clutter.”  In simple terms, clutter is items without a home.

Messless wants to share simple tips to reduce clutter and promote simplicity.

Grab What You Can
Imagine that you had 10 seconds to grab everything that was important to you in each room of your house.  The items that you choose are typically those that make you feel good or that serve a specific purpose.  These items should be the centerpieces in each room.

Everything that is left is suspect.  You may be accustomed to having these extra pieces present verses them serving an emotional, functional or aesthetic purpose.
More is Less
Did you know that the more stuff you have, the more work you have?  Your stuff needs to be maintained, repaired, updated and cleaned.  Who has time to do all this?
Evaluate your possessions to determine which items are too much work to keep.  If you are unable to provide the upkeep on all of your possessions, reconsider whether you actually need it.
Think about whether you need to purge some of these common items:
• Clothing - Clothing that has been in need of repair for over 6 months that has not been addressed.
• Electronics - Most electronic products need to be frequently updated and upgraded.  Old computers and radios that are no longer functional may need another home.
• Paper - Consider using your computer to scan magazine articles, personal documents and general interest material vs. keeping all of the paper.
• Toys –  Toys may have the shortest shelf life of any other item in your house.  Have you noticed how quickly children become bored, break or outgrow their toys?  It would be good practice to purge children’s toys monthly.  It’s amazing how quickly “kids meal” toys, prizes and coloring books accumulate.  Try making a game out of it.  “Let’s see if Johnnie is able to find 20 toys in his room to give to another child who doesn’t have as much to play with.”

Are you SUPER sentimental?
Let’s face it, things are typically associated with feelings.  The feelings could be positive, negative or neutral.  We sometimes have trouble purging because the “things” remind us of events, people, places or feelings that we want to hold close.  An overabundance of these items can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed verses warm and fuzzy.

Remember, your home is your sanctuary.  Start purging the bad stuff in order to make room for positive things to enter your life.

” Most electronic products need to be frequently updated and upgraded.”  Really?  I can’t remember any electronic products I’ve upgraded or updated more than once every 5 years or so (aside from simple software updates).
“Consider using your computer to scan magazine articles, personal documents and general interest material vs. keeping all of the paper.”  Interesting idea, but scanned pages take up a lot of space on your computer and taking the time to label and organize these seems like a huge task.  Maybe others have more magazines and paperwork than we do, but this doesn’t seem worth it.

This article is pretty good, but would be better with information of HOW to get rid of things.  Do we just throw them out?  Garage sale?

I hate clutter and tend to be the opposite getting rid of things before I should. I am a heavy user of craigslist to get rid of items. Posting is free and they come and pickup and bring cash. I stay away from eBay and yard sales. With a yard sale you need to accumulate enough to make it worthwhile and then the problem arises where to keep the accumulation.
