Taking Time For Your Fabulous Self

Alisha Gray-Johnson, MSW Messless Expert

Does it ever feel as though you are a co-pilot in your own life. Does it feel as though the responsibilities of being a parent, child, sibling, employee, business owner is consuming every ounce of your energy - leaving you with nothing for your-self? As a Messless expert, I want to help you to find 5-10 more hours a week to relax and do whatever YOU want. Something that will make you feel happy and energized. If we don’t take care of ourselves, we won’t have anything else to give to the people that we love.

I am going to share with you a few secrets that will free some extra time in your schedule. You have a make me a promise. After you incorporate these strategies in your routine, you must do something for YOU not add more stuff to your plate.

DELEGATE. Are you one of those people that believe that no one can complete tasks as well as you? If this is your core belief, you will probably consistently feel overwhelmed and unappreciated. Recognize the you can’t, and don’t have to do it all. Try delegating tasks at work and home. You will be surprised at how well people do when given clear instructions, deadlines and expectations. Practice letting go. Start with smaller tasks and gradually assign more. I was once told that the number of chores that a child is assigned should match their age.

OUTSOURCE. If it’s within your budget, hire someone to do the stuff that you don’t want to do. Typically, if you despise a particular task, you tend to procrastinate which ultimately wastes time. Don’t dare feel guilty about hiring that cleaning company, meal service or errand service. Focus your energy on activities that you enjoy not despise.

PLAY “Catch Up.” Make it a habit to carry with you a “catch up” folder that hold those pesky details you haven’t gotten around to such as: scheduling appointments, reviewing documents. The next time you are sitting at the doctor’s office waiting for your name to be called, pull out your “Catch Up” folder. Dead time can be productive time.

ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY AFFILIATIONS. Jot down all of the associations, committees and groups to which you belong. Review each one by creating a list of pros and cons for each organization. Eliminate those that are emotionally, financially or time-wise DRAINING. Keep those that are a GAIN. Reminisce about all of the organizations that you have attended over the years that were a total waste of your time. From this point on, don’t get sucked into these affiliations any more. Time is the one thing that you can’t get back.

Now that you have a plan to add more hours to your week, get out there and have some FUN!
