Just Showing My Age Linda Sellers Even though I don't turn another year older, each time we approach the end of a calendar year I can't help but realize how I'm approaching my golden years. I think at 47 I've officially passed middle age and am on the decline. And with the decline in my 401K, I'm really hoping there is something to look forward to in my retirement.I do realize with some certainty that the things I'm older than are a distant memory and not recognizable to many in these generations. I had a discussion with a friend about the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday Nights, eating on TV trays, and not even realizing that my Swanson frozen dinner had been put down in front of me. The gal asked what picture was on my little aluminum TV tray, the Smurfs? Wow, I was an adult when I was watching Papa Smurf and Smurfette. Try Howdy Doody and Lassie. Actually I think it was tacky brown flowers. Vintage 1970. So at 47 I am actually older than a lot of really cool things, some that are long forgotten, but some that are still alive and kicking. I'm very glad to say I'm not older than... Velcro - 1941 Slinky - 1945 Microwave oven - 1946 Liquid Paper - 1951 Hovercraft - 1952 Playboy - 1953 Disneyland - 1955 Digital Clock - 1956 Jet Boat - 1957 I feel a little better. These things are still bigger and better than before. Well, I don't really know about the Playboy, but Heff seems happy. And even though I never got a slinky to work the way it does in the commercial, they still sell the darn things. But who doesn't have a microwave or wish they had a Hovercraft? And do they make analog clocks any more? I guess so, but I can't say I've seen one. Maybe in my attic. But that's a different story. So if I'm older than you, it's only in years and maybe experience. Sure, that counts for a lot in today's society. But in inventions, it's just one slinky or hovercraft better than the next guy. Short Pump Preppy
