Spying On Suburbia: Birthday Parties

Birthday Parties

I went through a phase where we were spending $500.00 plus on my kid’s birthday parties.  It is embarrassing to write.  It is tacky to talk about.  If you have ever rented any local place for the most part you are paying around this much for your kids (and 15 of their closest friends) to romp around for one hour.  I decided that I would save money and therefore justify the ridiculousness of it all and make their cakes.  I found that I loved this activity.  Not because I am any good at it.  No, I suck at baking.  I just use a box and canned frosting…BUT the fun part is picking out the design.  I have made an eyeball that was in dirt with worms coming out and one year I did a princess cake.  The directions called for a cake doll.  I had no idea where to look for such a thing and so after hitting the Target and Ben Franklin without any luck, well, I opted for the Barbie that my daughter never used.  I pulled off the legs and stuffed Sparkle Barbie into the center of the pink and purple cake “dress”.

We were at a local romp room for this party.  It was my daughters 5th birthday.  My sister and I went to the back to get the cake and she started falling over with laughter.  I was like what…what is wrong with my cake.  She could not speak.  She was trying to say that it looked not like Barbie in a dress but Barbie trying to dig herself out of a pink mountain.  I too started to laugh and then my friend Demi came to the back and in her own fit of laughter, started to take pictures of the cake.

We rolled it out and everyone gasped.  They tried to act like it was so cool that I had made my own cake but I could see they were torn between laughter and embarrassment.  I thought it was funny until my daughter came running to the front and ripped the Barbie out of the cake screaming that her legs were missing.  Suddenly all the kids were freaked out by my mangled Barbie dress cake.  Needless to say this one did not go over too well and there were a lot of leftovers.

I have since resorted back to the old fashion at home party.  Regardless of the economic times, I just feel like it is irresponsible to spend that kind of money on a party that your kids won’t even remember.  I still make the cakes…I mean; I want to have fun too.
