Spying On Suburbia: The Cul-de-sac Playboys

Elizabeth James

The Cul-de-sac Playboys:

I remember one time, in a business meeting none the less, my first Playboy mistake…or rather misunderstanding.  There was an article that I had read, while sitting in the bathroom, and it was about a new company coming out with a cutting edge product.  I happened to be speaking to a male co-worker when this topic came up and so I said, “you read Playboy right?  He just stared at me.  I still wasn’t embarrassed.  I said, “You know the magazine” and he said, “Yes, I know the magazine and no I haven’t read that in years.”

I became very aware at that moment that this magazine does not sit openly in bathrooms spread throughout America.  I will say that it has to sit somewhere because it is one of the top subscribed to magazines by men my husband’s age. Anyway, I started to think that I must live with a giant teenager and I am indulging him because I like the magazine too.  What would women across the cul-de-sac think of me if they knew what kind of reading “went on” in this house?

The truth is that we love to read.  We read a variety of almost everything in this house.  We subscribe to around 10 magazines (that I can think of sitting here on my couch) probably more.  We get only one paper now but used to get four.  And books of/on every topic, subject and story type are stacked around every seating and bedding area in our home.  Playboy has been in our lives for 15 years.  The same amount of time that National Geographic and Vegetarian Times have been coming to us.  He is subscription #2 the second longest behind National G…a mainstay.  The truth is over the years, I stopped looking at all the women, realizing that (besides genetics) that age was now against me.  This became evident, as you can now turn to the centerfold profile and read she was born in 1986.  However, the articles are very interesting, covering everything from politics to video games and they do interview the coolest, most interesting people and they get real responses to real questions.

Anyway, it is time to say goodbye to old Playboy.  The truth is that the women across the cul-de-sac do know what kind of reading goes on in this house…thanks to my son.  You see last week my husband, wearing his crazy no sleep hair, jeans with socks tucked into his dress shoes and his trench coat, was at our bus stop with Bee and Joe, holding Big Lou.  When Lawn Goddess Lydia’s husband (Captain R) said to him, “Remember that time when you were that young man and you found your dad’s stash of nudie mags, you remember that feeling?”  My husband said, “Sure.”  He went on to say, “Well, Joe has that feeling.”

You see, Joe, apparently, or he did, grabbed one of the Playboy magazines and decided to show them to Lawn Goddess Lydia and Captain R’s three girls.  Oh yes, it was a proud moment at the bus stop.  Our son, the porno king of the cul-de-sac at the age of 8…

So, I told my husband that it was time to say goodbye to his good friend Magazine subscription #2.  He started to disagree but how do you argue with naked women photos and our son’s access to such.  It was a short lived sentence of defense.  We were both sad about this goodbye.  Well, we both reasoned that the articles were good…while they lasted.

PS

My husband just read this post and informed me that he was not getting rid of the Playboys that he will hide them.  This is great…make that two porno kings of the cul-de-sac.
